[colorforth] List welcome message change

Hello.

Mailing List welcome message change.

Notification to list users with immediate effect.

There has been some more discussion of archiving on a couple of lists. As
archiving is becoming more common, and is out of our control, we feel that
list members should be given 'fair warning' that this can occur and
give some possible solutions to help minimize privacy or more usually SPAM
issues.

*******************
List mail MAY be archived by 'Third Parties'. The reasons for this are
mainly to help people 'catch up' on what has been discussed in the past,
search for answers before posting what could be a repetitive message etc.

Users may object to this for privacy or more usually, anti-spam reasons.

For privacy reasons, your options are limited.

What is the deal with privacy you may be asking. It's a public list !

It all depends on what the mailing list is about and what you say. You
might say something inopportune e.g. about your medical situation, your
emotional health, your boss or company, you political views. Your dislike
of certain people, get into an argument that degenerates into mud sliging.
In the 'old days' this could be verbal in a small group of people, or a
closed mailing list of a hundred or so people. Once it's archived, it's
available for anyone to search. If there is enough identifiable
information, this could be held against you for insurance purposes, job
(perhaps they don't want hot headed people, people that will talk bad
against their bosses or company, have medical or emotional problems, don't
like gays, womens libbers, gun owners...take your pick or add anything
else), someone wanting to 'get even' and 'dig the dirt' on you. How
would you even know. They arn't going to tell you.
In the U.S., a lot of companies do criminal record and background checks
even though your debt to society is supposed to be paid.

It is really insideous and something you should be aware of.

Don't think this happens ? Being paranoid ?

It was expected to and...It already does. A number of companies in the U.S.
started doing this in 2001. They supply a 'service' to companies or
individuals so you can get ALL public record information including email.

Just monitoring the list, being careful of what you say, use and change
'throwaway' addresses with no identifying information are options if this
is an issue for you.

Anti-SPAM

A lot of archivers will 'munge' the email address to prevent
'harvesting' by internet robots. Others have in place systems, that they
hope will block robot access.

Users may want to review their signature blocks as archivers will not
usually munge an email address within the body of a mail. Changing the @
to a (at) is a possibility (athough robots are aware of this),
creating a new signature block for mailing list traffic is another option.
Using a 'do not archive' header is also an option although it will cause a
break in archived material.
*******************

In conclusion, Chaos Solutions L.C. does not archive for public use.
Further, we do not agree to, condone or give permission for this to occur.

Kind regards.
