If you want any degree of error recovery, and/or high throughput, for
anything above 4800 baud, you need at least a 12-bit A/D converter.  The
reason for this is that speeds of 9600 bps or higher use either a 2400 or
4800 signalling speed, but use many levels of amplitude modulation in
addition to phase and/or frequency modulation.  You will also need a
sampling frequency at about 88kHz minimum for 33.6kbps speeds.

While a 6-bit A/D converter will suffice for this material in the
laboratory, you need the increased resolution of a 12-bit unit to handle
things like fading, variable signal/noise ratios, phase distortions, etc.
All of these things would cause aliasing errors in a 6-bit or 8-bit unit.
