I'm on vacation till next tuesday, but one comment about back
patching:  You need a temporary region to keep track of forward
references.  This needs a name field, a link field (to other entries)
and a data field. (Or call them what you will).  The data field is a
location to be patched.  If this location holds a zero you're done.
Otherwise, it holds the location of another place to be patched.
